My sister in law Joanne posted this article on her blog and I was almost in tears reading it. This article sums up so many of the same fears I've had in raising girls, it's scary. The way she described her childhood is totally how I remember mine being, and my how things have changed. So sad.
Read it:
Things have gotten too far, and it's ridiculous. We need to fight for our kids!

I like that lady. I think we'd be friends with her. :) I totally agree, though. Raising daughters is hard because you're fighting to keep them from 1. being objectified sexually and 2. wanting to be objectified sexually. Then there's the downside of boys where you're trying to keep them from 1. seeing anything that objectifies girls or 2. think it's ok to objectify them. Parenting is hard, but I find it's easier to not get too stressed and scared of the world by realizing Heavenly Father wouldn't have let us all be raising families if there wasn't a way to raise them in righteousness. Scriptures and modern scripture are essentially our parenting book. Sorry for the long-windedness.
I try not to let myself think about things like this right now or the hormones make me a paranoid woman!
BUT, I think a lot of what our daughters learn they will learn from us. If mom tramps around in tight jeans and four inch heels, it is seen as acceptable. If mom dresses modestly and appropriately, then that's what they'll know. (I read once that this is a good reason for moms to take care of themselves and not dress like frumps. If they're frumpy, their daughters won't want to dress like them. But if they take care of themselves and try to look presentable, modesty will be more appealing to their daughters.) But then again, it's really about so much more than what's on the outside. Though that counts, too.
What a great article. This is exactly some of my thoughts that I could never quite put into words. Yikes, it's scary. If all of us stick together and help each other out our girls will turn out just fine, right?
Thanks for sharing!
