Yesterday I drove past Lehi High School and noticed that they have a big grassy green soccer field right on the road that tons of people were running in front of my car to. I slowed down to see the girl's soccer team playing against who I think was Lone Peak, but I'm not sure...(I went as slow as I could, but traffic was backing up behind me...). I thought back to my glory days...strapping on the shin guards, warming up...I was SO tempted to pull over and watch the girls play, but I didn't. Gracie was hungry and tired, and made it clear to me she wasn't in the mood.
I love soccer more than ANY sport. I love watching it on t.v. (I know most people don't...), playing it of course, talking about it...can't get enough.I played soccer every year on a kiwanis team (see picture...we had the sweet reversible blue/red shirts!) in Burley...every year when we'd pull up to the first practice of the season I would glance over the field hoping to see another girl there...but no such luck. I was the ONLY girl on my team every year! I was pretty good friends with most of the boys though, and the older I got, the better I got at keeping up with them. I played all through school, went to BYU camps in the summers and played on intramural and indoor teams through college. Jared played in High School (quit football to play soccer!GASP!) and with me after his mission on a couple teams, so he shares the love.
When I lived in Boise I played on an indoor league with some friends and a whole lot of Mexicans who were AMAZING! They could dribble circles around me. While warming up, one of them kicked the ball so hard, and I just happened to step in front of him in the process. I got a ball to my head, and he kicked it so hard that my feet flew out from under me, and I was knocked out for about 20 seconds. Playing on that team was crazy, but so much fun :)
A couple years ago before Gracie was born, Jared and I played on an indoor league with some of my coworkers. My coworkers are REALLY good at soccer, so they signed us up to be in the hardest league possible. It was brutal. We were playing ex-byu soccer stars, pretty much professionals, and got killed most of the time. Even though we never won (I think we tied once), I still loved it. And even though I was probably one of the worst players on our team, I still loved it.
We are in the process of brainwashing Gracie to love soccer. She has her own little black and white soccer ball that I help her kick around the apartment. She's got a natural talent, I can tell already. :)

I love watching soccer also, especially when you are out there on the field. Let's get a family game going!
Love, your soccer mom
Wait, it was crazy, but so much fun to get drilled in the head by a ball so hard you got knocked out for 20 seconds?! Am I snorting crazy-dust?! I once got drilled in the lip with a baseball and I don't think i'd describe it as--'crazy, but so much fun'(?!) You are a silly little sister. A silly, soccer-loving sister.
THAT part wasn't fun, but playing on that TEAM was fun, El. :)
ok, i guess that makes more sense...unless you really dig being knocked out. (crazy tho, I had never heard story!)
I love the picture. I recognize all but a few of the guys-- too cute!
I can't share the love of soccer, but every once in a while I'll smell a hot gym and be taken back to end of summer volleyball, open gyms and try-outs. Those were good times.
I remember you telling me the ball-in-the-head story and I laughed so hard because I could imagine your feet flying out from under you! HA! Still funny.
I understand the "it was still fun" thing. I got a basketball to the head (thrown from half court to the end where I was cheering) and I still had fun cheering after I got my equilibrium back! :)
oh, so that's why my siblings are all a little "off"....all these "ball to the head" stories are beginning to make sense...
